Last Friday I had the chance to have dinner with the family of one of my friends here in Florida, a Jewish American Family who had the opportunity of living at California, Ohio, Florida and visit many countries, and of course it led us to some interesting and consuming conversation that made time fly from 7:30pm to midnight without us even noticing.
It's always great to see other people's points of view, and I have to be completely honest in saying that it was something I missed really a lot, having a conversation about different topics with people of different backgrounds, cultures, ages, etc. What can I say? I just love the diversity.
Some highlights from their point of view in the conversation were:
"
US is becoming a Hegemonic Power in the world, but if there's going to be one, there's none out there better than us, taking into consideration that we do not go into other countries in order to conquer them, or stay in there forever"
"
France wouldn't want to get into Irak because they have lost every war they got into, while the US has won every single one of them"
"
Americans are in my opinion the most culturally adaptable in the world", and I have to say that if you look at Multinational Companies inside Latin America you will see the incredible amount of Americans in Management positions, so is this statement somehow true?
"
We went to Romania in 1996, and it was a really poor and sad country" and I have to say that I went there in 2001 and had an incredible and amazing experience in an AIESEC Conference, but as always it is all about perception, and AIESEC makes things look different doesn't it?
"
American Football can't become a big sport in Latin America, as for it you need precision, discipline and perfect timing, things that Latin Americans are not good at", but I have to ask now what is then the main reason why soccer is not widely played or looked into in the US and it is in Latin America?, is it actually our different cultural backgrounds that define this or what is it?
As always we all have different point of view on different things, and as the AFS motto says "
It's not good, it's not bad, it's just different" but I would have to add, it's also interesting to understand the why behind these points of view, and there's no better way to do it than having a good conversation on it. What do you guys think about this? Let's hear it!
